Leadership and Ministries

The leadership and ministries of Apostles Lutheran Church is carried out by many faithful servants who use their God-given gifts to share the love of Christ. While we are currently in a season of transition, we remain committed to worship, discipleship, fellowship, and serving our community. We are grateful for the pastors, ministry leaders, volunteers, and members who faithfully serve our congregation each week.

Leadership

Rev. Dr. William Skiles, Interim Pastor

Pastor William Skiles, his wife, Renee, and their three children joined Apostles Lutheran Church in the spring of 2022. He was ordained in the Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC) at Apostles Lutheran Church in October 2023. Having served alongside our Senior Pastor, Pastor Skiles now faithfully serves as our Interim Pastor, providing pastoral leadership, preaching God's Word, celebrating the Sacraments, and caring for our congregation during this season of transition.

Pastor Skiles earned a Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary and completed Lutheran studies through The Master's Institute in Minnesota.

In addition to his pastoral ministry, Pastor Skiles holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of California, San Diego, and serves as Associate Professor of History and Associate Dean of Academics in the College of Arts and Sciences at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Pastor Skiles has been a tremendous blessing to our church family. His faithful leadership, thoughtful teaching, and heart for ministry continue to encourage and strengthen our congregation as we seek God's direction for the future

When he's not teaching or serving the church, Pastor Skiles enjoys reading science fiction and spending time around a good barbecue.

Ministries

Prayer

Leader: Linda Briggs

Our Prayer Ministry is dedicated to lifting up the needs of our church, community, and beyond through the power of prayer. This group is especially focused on praying for others, offering encouragement and faithfully bringing prayer requests before the Lord. Members gather each Thursday for a Zoom prayer meeting to pray together and support one another in faith.

Women's Bible Study

Leader: Beth Morrow

Women of all ages are invited to join us for Bible study, prayer, and fellowship as we grow together in God's Word and encourage one another in our faith. Throughout the year, we study a variety of Christian books and Bible study series. Recent studies have included 12 Daring Women of the Bible, Ephesians, In the Footsteps of the Savior by Max Lucado, and Becoming More Than a Good Bible Study Girl by Lysa TerKeurst.

We meet Wednesdays from 6:30–8:00 p.m. in the Hebrews Café.

Currently on summer break. Bible study resumes after Labor Day.

Peace Quilters

Leader: Susan Weaver and Carrie Johnston

The Peace Quilters ministry brings together people who enjoy sewing, quilting, and serving others. Through their time and talents, members create handmade quilts that are shared with individuals and organizations in need throughout our community. Some of the ministries and organizations we support include nursing homes, Meals on Wheels, Ronald McDonald House, Edmarc Children's Hospice, Crisis Pregnancy Center, Tunnels to Towers Veteran Housing, and ForKids Virginia.

The Peace Quilters meet on the second Saturday of each month at 9:00 a.m. This ministry is supported entirely through donations, and everyone is welcome. No quilting experience is necessary—just a willingness to learn and a desire to serve.

Prayer Shawl

Leader: Georgia Barton

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry is a heartfelt expression of God's love, comfort, and care. Since 2010, Georgia Barton, along with other faithful volunteers, has lovingly handcrafted prayer shawls that are prayed over throughout their creation and blessed before being shared with those experiencing illness, grief, recovery, or other difficult seasons of life.

Each shawl is given as a tangible reminder that its recipient is surrounded by God's love and the prayers of our church family.

Youth Group

Leader: Gina Smith and Cody Baker

Our Youth Group provides opportunities for young people to build friendships, grow in their faith, and enjoy time together in a fun, welcoming environment. Throughout the year, we gather for a variety of activities and outings, including game nights, bowling, skating, Norfolk Tides games, and other special events.
